The history of Kuala Lumpur City Hall began during the British colonial period when at that time the government urbanization agency that administered urbanization in the Kuala Lumpur area was the Kuala Lumpur Town Council.
In 1961... The Kuala Lumpur Town Council was upgraded and renamed to the Federal Capital Commission headed by a Federal Capital Commissioner.
In 1972... Kuala Lumpur achieved city status and became the first official city in Malaysia by the Malaysian government (George Town in Penang received city recognition from Queen Elizabeth of the British but as soon as the country achieved independence... the city status was revoked by the federal government). The Federal Capital Commission was once again upgraded and renamed to the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, DBKL) headed by a Mayor.
In 1974... Kuala Lumpur was officially declared a Federal Territory in Malaysia. Four years later in 1978... Kuala Lumpur was officially no longer the capital of Selangor and Shah Alam was declared the new capital of Selangor.
As the capital of Malaysia and also the main economic area of this country... Kuala Lumpur is experiencing a very rapid population, economic and industrial growth.
Starting with a small town during the British colonial era... then becoming a rapidly developing city as soon as the country achieved independence... then in the 70s era it became a city... then in the 80s era it became a metropolitan area when it reached the population a million people... then in the new millennium era began to become a world-class cosmopolitan city... and now it has become the main urbanization area of a megalopolitan country... Kuala Lumpur is indeed moving forward step by step to become a superior urbanization area in this country.
The busiest economic area in the administrative area of Kuala Lumpur City Hall (Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur, DBKL) is the Bukit Bintang Triangle.
